What are the powers of the Scottish Parliament?

Written by

In the run up to the general election, the other policital parties made great use of talking about reserved matters in the TV debates.

They did this to try and confuse people. They also did this in an attempt to distract their oponents, and to steer the debate into the topic of their choice.

Here are the list of devolved and reserved matters from the Scottish Parliament website - http://www.parliament.scot/visitandlearn/12506.aspx

Devolved Matters

  • agriculture, forestry and fisheries
  • education and training
  • environment
  • health and social services
  • housing
  • law and order
  • local government
  • sport and the arts
  • tourism and economic development
  • many aspects of transport

Reserved Matters

  • benefits and social security
  • immigration
  • defence
  • foreign policy
  • employment
  • broadcasting
  • trade and industry
  • nuclear energy, oil, coal, gas and electricity
  • consumer rights
  • data protection
  • the Constitution
